St. Bernard Port Releases Annual Activity Report

The St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District recently released its annual activity report to the American Association of Port Authorities.

Final figures for 2015 revealed an increase in high value general cargo transfers resulting in 1,032,393.344 short tons, up from the 906,151.065 short tons handled in 2014 at the St. Bernard Port’s maritime facilities which include Arabi, Chalmette and Violet Terminals/Industrial Parks, as well as Meraux and Chalmette Mid-Stream Mooring Facilities. General cargo is more labor intensive and creates more jobs than dry bulk cargo handling requires.

The Port recorded 4,485 barge calls last year and the number of oceangoing vessel calls grew to 342, up 16 from 2014. In addition, the Port’s newly-acquired Violet Terminal saw four ship calls in 2015, and an additional seven to date in 2016.

Dr. Robert Scafidel, the Port’s executive director, said he is pleased with the Port’s tonnage calculations for 2015 and foresees continued growth for 2016.

“Last year’s figures indicated a significant growth in general cargo for the St. Bernard Port,” Scafidel said. “We also saw an increase in vessel traffic, and the acquisition of the Violet Terminal will only aid in that progression in the future.”
